As part of the Clean Kerala Initiative of Responsible Tourism (RT) Mission, around 225 tourism accommodation units in Kerala will be made ‘plastic-free’. The project is being implemented in association with Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) Society.

Mr Kadakampally Surendran, Minister for Tourism, said that the aim was to make nine selected destinations 100% plastic-free through this project.

Plastic items like carry bags, trays, disposable cups, bottles, straws, plates, cups, cling film, thermocol, bowls, flags, sheets used for food parcels, spoons, fruit and vegetable punnets, juice packets, PVC flex materials and food parceling plastic containers will be avoided completely.

With the aim of spreading the core values of this initiative, the Mission had organized a two-day workshop for tourism industry partners.

As many as 30 resorts, 35 homestays, 30 house boats and 130 hotels across the state have already handed over the self-declaration form to RT Mission.

Ms Rani George, Secretary, Kerala Tourism stated that Kumarakom could be declared as the first plastic-free destination of Kerala in 2020 itself.

Mr Bala Kiran IAS, Director, Kerala Tourism, said that the department has already started RT classification for tourism enterprises to achieve this goal.
