Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo has announced plans to introduce its first widebody aircraft, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, through a damp lease agreement with Norwegian long-haul carrier Norse Atlantic Airways. The move marks a significant step in the airline’s expansion into the long-haul market.
IndiGo confirmed that the aircraft will arrive in India in the next few weeks, with operations expected to begin as early as next month. While the airline has not disclosed specific routes, a filing by Norse Atlantic revealed that the aircraft will start serving long-haul routes from India in March 2025.
The addition of a widebody aircraft comes as IndiGo looks to expand its reach beyond its traditional short- and medium-haul markets. In a January 24 earnings call, CEO Pieter Elbers shared that the airline is considering interim solutions for introducing long-range aircraft, including wet lease agreements, while awaiting regulatory approvals. “Subject to regulatory approvals, we are exploring interim solutions for an earlier introduction of long-range aircraft to our fleet through wet leases,” Elbers said.
The partnership with Norse Atlantic is seen as a strategic move to tap into high-demand international routes as IndiGo strengthens its global network. The initial damp lease agreement will last for six months, with the possibility of an extension to 18 months. IndiGo has also indicated interest in leasing additional aircraft from Norse Atlantic.
The airline is focusing on key European hubs like London and Paris, both of which are significant markets for Indian businesses and the growing Indian diaspora. “Indian businesses are expanding internationally, our citizens are exploring more destinations than ever before, and our diaspora continues to grow. However, there are still certain key markets, which are underserved and this represents a fast reservoir of untapped potential,” Elbers explained.
The introduction of long-haul services comes at a time when the Indian aviation sector is undergoing a major transformation, with increased demand and competition in both domestic and international markets.
