Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, emphasised the urgent need for stronger collaboration between the Centre and State governments to develop world-class tourism destinations capable of competing on the global stage. Speaking at a key tourism-focused gathering, the Minister highlighted that India’s tourism growth story can only accelerate through coordinated planning, integrated infrastructure development, and sustainable destination management.
He underlined that tourism is not only an economic driver but also a strategic sector capable of generating employment, boosting local economies, preserving heritage, and strengthening India’s global cultural identity. According to the Minister, every state possesses unique tourism assets, ranging from heritage and spirituality to wellness, nature, wildlife, and experiential tourism, which must be professionally developed and globally promoted.
The Minister stressed that while the Central Government can provide policy direction, financial support, and national-level promotion, the role of State governments remains equally critical in ensuring efficient implementation, connectivity, infrastructure readiness, cleanliness, safety, and visitor experience. He called for tourism destinations to be developed with international standards in hospitality, transport, digital accessibility, and sustainability.
He also highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships, investment-led tourism infrastructure, and stronger industry participation to create globally benchmarked tourism ecosystems across the country. Referring to India’s growing international visibility and expanding domestic tourism market, the Minister noted that this is the right time for India to position itself as a leading global tourism hub.
The address also focused on the need for integrated destination planning, improved connectivity, skill development, and community participation to create long-term tourism value. Industry stakeholders, tourism professionals, and state representatives attending the event echoed the importance of unified efforts in transforming India’s tourism landscape.
The Minister’s remarks come at a time when India is witnessing rapid growth in spiritual tourism, experiential travel, MICE tourism, and heritage-led destination development, creating significant opportunities for both domestic and international tourism expansion.
