In a determined push to revive tourism in Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the need for unified efforts between the government and private sector stakeholders to reclaim the region’s stature as India’s premier travel destination. Speaking at the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Revival Dialogue– a landmark event co-organized by FICCI and the Department of Tourism at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC)—the Chief Minister called for collective responsibility in charting a sustainable and resilient tourism roadmap.

“It is our duty to do everything in our power to restore Jammu and Kashmir to its rightful place as the pre-eminent tourist destination of the country- and to ensure it remains there,” he said in his keynote address. He outlined the government’s focus on enhancing the overall tourist experience through a combination of infrastructure development, policy support, and destination diversification.

Reflecting on recent challenges, the Chief Minister recalled the emotional shift witnessed in the valley. “From the vibrant scenes of shikaras on Dal Lake in April to a sudden silence days later, it was a stark reminder of how the past continues to impact the present,” he noted, referencing a dip in tourist arrivals following an unfortunate incident. He acknowledged the volatility that tourism in J&K has historically faced, but praised the industry’s resilience. “Here, we plan week to week. But the important thing is- we plan, and we persist.”

In a strategic move to expand the tourism landscape, Abdullah unveiled details of Project SPREAD, which aims to develop nine new destinations across both Jammu and Kashmir, supported by potential multilateral funding. He also stressed the importance of improving connectivity, noting the transformative experience of rail travel through the region’s scenic and challenging terrain. “We may not yet have a direct Delhi-Srinagar line, but it’s only a matter of time,” he said.

Highlighting niche segments, the Chief Minister pointed to government efforts in promoting MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism, golf, film tourism, and destination weddings. He revealed that a new world-class conference facility in Gulmarg is nearing completion.

To commemorate the occasion, the Chief Minister also unveiled the book ‘Golfing in Paradise’ by Atul Dir, showcasing Jammu & Kashmir’s potential as a high-end golf tourism destination.
