The Union Government has given the green light to the Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina, a major new marina development in Mumbai Harbour that promises to reshape the city’s waterfront and significantly boost maritime tourism and coastal infrastructure. Backed by an estimated ₹887 crore investment, the project is designed to strengthen Mumbai’s position as a key global destination for maritime tourism while advancing India’s coastal shipping and blue economy ambitions.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal described the approval as a pivotal milestone for India’s maritime sector, highlighting its potential to create world-class infrastructure, expand public access to the waterfront, attract private investment, and generate substantial employment opportunities. The initiative fits within the broader Maritime India Vision 2030 and aligns with national policies aimed at enhancing the country’s coastal and maritime ecosystem.
Spanning nearly 12 hectares of water area, the Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina will accommodate up to 424 yachts of 30 metres in length, offering state-of-the-art berthing and operational facilities that cater to both domestic and international visitors. The development will be carried out through a hybrid model: the Mumbai Port Authority (MPA) will invest around ₹470 crore in core marine infrastructure, including breakwaters, pontoons, and service platforms, constructed on an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) basis. A private operator will contribute approximately ₹417 crore to build complementary onshore facilities.
Onshore development plans include a marina terminal building, a Namo Bharat International Sailing School, a maritime tourism centre, hotel and clubhouse amenities, a skill development centre, and spaces for yacht maintenance and repair – all aimed at creating a vibrant hub for tourism, training, recreation and maritime services.
The project is expected to attract significant private sector participation, create more than 2,000 jobs across sectors such as hospitality, marina operations, yacht services and allied industries, and stimulate economic activity in the region. By improving waterfront accessibility and enhancing Mumbai’s marine infrastructure, the marina is seen as a catalyst for further investments and urban renewal along the city’s eastern seafront.
Tenders for construction and operation have been floated, with bids scheduled to close on December 29, 2025, marking the next step in bringing this ambitious vision to life.
The Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina not only reinforces Mumbai’s role as a premier maritime gateway but also underscores India’s growing focus on sustainable tourism, coastal development, and the blue economy.
