The supervisory board of Messe Berlin GmbH appointed Dr. Mario Tobias as the new CEO of the group of companies. He is moving from the Potsdam Chamber of Industry and Commerce to Messe Berlin.
From 1 September 2023, Dr. Tobias, together with managing director Dirk Hoffmann, will lead the Messe Berlin group of companies with its eight subsidiaries and nine international holdings at the Berlin location.

With his strategic skills and excellent competence in organisational development, customer and service orientation, coupled with his leadership and transformation experience as well as his network in important future fields such as digitalisation and sustainability management, he is the ideal appointment. He will give Messe Berlin new impetus and lead our company holistically into a sustainably successful future”, says Eric Schweitzer, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Messe Berlin. “My special thanks go to Dirk Hoffmann, who has succeeded excellently in recent months in bringing Messe Berlin back to its former strength. I look forward to continuing to work with the management team.”
Dr. Mario Tobias comes from the Potsdam Chamber of Industry and Commerce, of which he has been Chief Executive Officer since 2014. With 140 employees and more than 80,000 member companies, the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce and Industry is the second largest regional chamber in Germany. In recent years, Dr Tobias has successfully transformed IHK Potsdam into one of the most modern corporations under public law with a clear focus on digitalisation, human resources development, customer orientation and communication.
From 2011 to 2014, Dr Mario Tobias built up the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies as Secretary General, which investigates the social discourse on the energy transition and climate protection. Previously, Dr Tobias was a member of the executive board at the leading industry association Bitkom, where he was responsible for the topics of IT services, security, consumer electronics and green IT in close cooperation with trade fairs, ministries and associations. Since 2005, Dr Tobias has been an honorary professor of business administration at the Institute of Automotive Economics and Industrial Production at the Technical University of Braunschweig.
