New Zealand is set to further digitise its visa application process, with Immigration New Zealand (INZ) moving selected visitor and transit visa applications to its enhanced Immigration Online system from October 1, 2026.

The move is part of New Zealand’s wider effort to modernise immigration services and make the visa application process more convenient, transparent and accessible for international travellers. Under the new system, applicants will be able to complete their applications digitally, upload supporting documents online and track the progress of their applications without relying on traditional paper-based processes.

The change will apply to several key visa categories, including the General Visitor Visa, Business Visitor Visa, Group Visitor Visa and Transit Visa. These categories are widely used by travellers visiting New Zealand for tourism, business activities, group travel and transit purposes.

The enhanced Immigration Online platform is designed to provide applicants with a more streamlined experience through guided application forms and digital document submission. The system is also expected to make it easier for applicants to monitor their applications and receive updates during the processing journey.

Following the transition, paper applications for the affected visa categories will generally no longer be accepted, except in limited or exceptional circumstances. Applicants who are planning to travel to New Zealand are therefore advised to familiarise themselves with the online process and ensure that all required documents are prepared in digital format.

The latest development reflects the growing shift towards digital immigration services globally, as governments seek to reduce paperwork, improve processing efficiency and offer travellers greater visibility over their applications.

For travellers and businesses planning visits to New Zealand, the transition represents an important change in the way visa applications will be submitted and managed, making early preparation increasingly important ahead of the October 1 deadline.
