In a landmark move for India’s tourism sector, Cholan Tours has launched the country’s first professional women chauffeur initiative for long-distance and multi-day travel. The pioneering programme challenges long-standing gender norms in highway and tour driving while setting a new benchmark for inclusive hospitality.
Traditionally dominated by men, long-route tour driving in India has seen limited female participation. Cholan Tours’ initiative opens structured career pathways for women, redefining workforce dynamics within the travel industry. Professionally trained female chauffeurs will now operate across extended routes and diverse terrains, maintaining the company’s established standards of safety, reliability, and guest service.
The initiative is expected to significantly enhance traveller confidence-particularly for solo female travellers, families, and women-only groups—by fostering a greater sense of comfort and security. At the same time, it creates meaningful employment opportunities, enabling financial independence and long-term career growth for women in the tourism ecosystem.
Each chauffeur undergoes a comprehensive training programme covering advanced driving skills, route expertise, safety protocols, and hospitality etiquette. Structured logistical and accommodation support systems have also been implemented to ensure operational efficiency and driver well-being during overnight assignments.
Strengthening the impact of this initiative, Cholan Tours has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Tamil Nadu to facilitate the appointment of 100 women drivers for tour operations across the state. This public-private collaboration positions tourism as a powerful tool for social empowerment.
With this bold step, Cholan Tours is not only expanding its service portfolio but also reshaping the narrative of Indian travel-proving that inclusive growth and service excellence can move forward together
