Hong Kong Charts Strategic Path to Regain Global Tourism Leadership: WTTC Report

A recent report by the World Travel and Tourism Council highlights that Hong Kong is steadily advancing towards reclaiming its position as a leading global tourism destination through a well-defined recovery strategy. The report notes that the city’s Travel & Tourism sector has already rebounded to approximately 98.5% of its pre-pandemic levels, signalling strong resilience and momentum.

Despite this progress, international visitor numbers and inbound spending have yet to fully match 2018 benchmarks, indicating significant room for growth. To address this, Hong Kong is actively working to diversify its source markets beyond mainland China, targeting high-growth regions such as ASEAN countries, India, and the Middle East. This strategic shift aims to reduce dependency on a single market while enhancing the overall quality and value of tourism.

A major pillar of Hong Kong’s recovery strategy is the enhancement of visitor experiences, with a focus on increasing per capita spending and offering more diverse, high-value tourism products. The government has committed substantial support to this vision, announcing an investment of approximately HKD 1.6 billion for 2026–27 to boost tourism promotion, large-scale events, and international engagement.

The report also underscores the importance of revitalising business travel and strengthening Hong Kong’s position as a hub for global events, conferences, and exhibitions. With world-class infrastructure, including seamless connectivity through Hong Kong International Airport and advanced venue capabilities, the city is well-positioned to attract international delegates and host large-scale gatherings.

By combining strategic market diversification, targeted investments, and a renewed focus on global engagement, Hong Kong is reinforcing its competitiveness on the world stage. The WTTC report concludes that with sustained efforts, the city can not only regain but further strengthen its standing as a premier global tourism and business events destination.
