The Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) has announced venue-wide upgrades and renovations following a strong operational year in 2025, during which it hosted a total of 127 exhibitions and events, achieving a venue occupancy rate of 64% across 300,000 sqm.
Taking advantage of the Lunar New Year break, when no exhibitions were scheduled, SNIEC initiated upgrades to its air conditioning systems in the West Halls and No. 1 Entrance Lobby. Simultaneously, refurbishment work across 152 restrooms is ongoing. These hardware upgrade projects have been carefully scheduled to ensure no disruption to client events and exhibitions, while aiming to enhance customer experience and deliver its “S+” level service commitment to organizers, exhibitors, sponsors, and visitors.
Air Conditioning Upgrades
After more than two decades of high-intensity operations and increasing climate-related demands, the existing air conditioning systems in the W-side exhibition halls and No. 1 Entrance Lobby faced limitations, particularly during peak summer periods.
Addressing this, Michael Kruppe stated that the upgrade project aims to create a more efficient, stable, and intelligent indoor environment, following a principle of holistic planning and phased implementation.
The construction is being executed in two phases to minimize operational disruptions. The upgrades include the installation of more energy-efficient units with enhanced cooling capacity and improved airflow, resulting in better cooling efficiency and overall system performance. Additionally, the air outlet layout in the No. 1 Entrance Lobby has been redesigned into an L-shaped configuration to ensure uniform air distribution and improved space utilization.
Restroom Renovations and Upgrades
SNIEC is also undertaking a comprehensive upgrade of all 152 restrooms in response to client feedback. The initiative focuses on enhancing functionality while aligning with the venue’s modern and minimalist design.
Upgrades include improvements to sewage and ventilation systems to enhance air quality, along with efforts to increase the number of restroom units where feasible to reduce congestion during peak hours. The project also incorporates low-carbon materials and equipment, supporting sustainable operational practices. Renovation work in the No. 2 Entrance Lobby restrooms is currently underway as planned.
SNIEC continues to position itself as a proactive and dynamic platform by closely monitoring industry trends and responding to client needs. Through ongoing investments in infrastructure and service enhancements, the venue aims to strengthen its leadership in both the Chinese and international exhibition and convention industry.
